Itinerary Details

Your Adventure into Deep Time:

  • Morning Departure & Arrival at a Prehistoric Realm: Your day begins with a comfortable departure from Cairo. Upon arrival at the Jabal al-Qatrani Protected Area (approximately 15km north of Lake Qarun), you’ll be warmly received by reserve officials. After handling the entrance fee (approx. $5 or €5 per person), an introductory briefing will set the stage, unveiling the profound geological significance of this incredible site.

  • Tour the Open-Air Fossil Museum – A Walk Through 40 Million Years:

    • Embark on an exploratory journey along a designated trail (segments up to 28km, with a focused 1.2km trail showcasing 292 distinct fossils). Witness the silent testament of creatures that roamed Fayoum when it was a vastly different environment.
    • Encounter the fossilized remains of more than 10 extinct animal species, including ancient elephants, crocodiles, and even whales – yes, whales in the desert, from a time when this area was submerged!
    • Discover the Petrified Forest, an awe-inspiring expanse (30 km²) where giant trees, dating back 34 million years, have turned to stone. Learn how basalt from this region was ingeniously quarried and used in the majestic Pharaonic temples.
  • “Waddan El Faras” Peaks – The Horse’s Ears: Marvel at these two iconic twin peaks, resembling a horse’s ears, that rise dramatically 300-400 meters. They are among the mountain’s most prominent landmarks and offer truly stunning panoramic views of the surrounding ancient landscape – a perfect photo opportunity!

  • The World’s Oldest Paved Road – Path of the Pharaohs: Walk in the footsteps of ancient Egyptians on the Pharaonic Basalt Road. This marvel of ancient engineering is recognized as the oldest paved road in the world, once used by the Pharaohs to transport massive basalt stones from the quarries down to Lake Qarun, and then across the Nile to the Giza plateau for their monumental constructions.

  • Desert Repast & Exploration:

    • Enjoy a light, included lunch in a designated area within the reserve or amidst the captivating natural scenery.
    • Take your time to soak in the views and capture incredible souvenir photos.
    • Embark on an exhilarating 4×4 safari tour to explore more of the rugged, surrounding areas.
    • Visit the nearby, serene Lake Qarun and enjoy its stunning vistas.
  • Dimiyat al-Sabaa (Sknopaios) – Unveiling a Lost City: Journey to Dimiyat al-Sabaa, the “City of Lions” (known as Sknopaios in Greek times), located just 3km north of Lake Qarun. This ancient archaeological city dates back to the Greco-Roman era.

    • Highlights: Explore its high mud-brick walls, wander stone-paved roads (including a 400-meter stretch connecting to Lake Qarun), and see the remains of a small stone temple. Recent discoveries of stone statues further emphasize its historical importance. A true delight for history and archaeology buffs!
  • Wadi al-Battikh – The Enigmatic Watermelon Valley: Discover one of Egypt’s most peculiar natural wonders! Located north of Lake Qarun, this valley is famed for its unique, watermelon-like rock formations.

    • Highlights: Marvel at these solid, rounded rocks in hues of green, black, and gray, some weighing between 20 and 100 kilograms. These geological curiosities are believed to have formed from volcanic activity around 65 million years ago, as minerals crystallized in underwater mud. An ideal spot for camping (if on a longer tour), safaris, and truly unique photography.
  • Return to Cairo: As your incredible journey through time concludes, we will begin our comfortable return to Cairo, your mind filled with the ancient wonders and dramatic beauty of Fayoum.
